Presentation:

Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The “Engineering Materials” research group is seeking highly motivated candidates for a PhD position to carry out research on a new Ni-based superalloy. As a PhD student, you will be a part of a dynamic and international research environment, closely collaborating with industry and leading universities worldwide. The research group “Engineering Materials” is engaged in extensive research programs spanning a broad range of metallic and ceramic materials. We are part of the Division of Materials Science, which operates under the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. The Department has several other research topics relevant to materials research (e.g. material mechanics, machine elements and solid mechanics).

Subject description
Engineering materials includes the field of material composition, structure, properties and production of materials – mainly metallic and ceramic – as well as application aspects.

Project description
This project aims to evaluate a new wrought Ni-based superalloy, ATI 273TM, which offers high manufacturability and exceptional properties that surpass existing superalloys. This project will systematically study the thermodynamic properties, microstructure, mechanical properties, and weldability of ATI 273TM. The goal is to ensure that this superalloy can be seamlessly integrated into aerospace component manufacturing workflows while maintaining structural integrity and performance throughout its lifecycle. Key users of the research findings will be aeronautical engineers and manufacturers, who can leverage the results to design more reliable and efficient aircraft engines, thereby reducing operating costs and environmental impact.

Duties
A doctoral position involves both theoretical and experimental work aimed at advancing the understanding and application of Ni-based superalloys in high-temperature aerospace materials. The research will be applied and multidisciplinary, encompassing laboratory work, modeling, and characterization. You will engage in comprehensive thermodynamical characterizations, and heat treatment optimizations. Your duties will include conducting experimental studies to optimize heat treatment processes and performing detailed microstructure analysis using advanced microscopy techniques. The project will also require you to assess the mechanical properties and weldability of ATI 273TM alloy, ensuring its practical applicability in aerospace manufacturing. The project is carried out in collaboration with GKN Aerospace in Trollhättan in Sweden.

As a PhD student, you will be trained in scientific work through the publication of scientific articles in reputed journals and at national and international conferences. As a doctoral student, you will take both compulsory and elective courses, plan and execute your research projects independently, and have the opportunity to participate in teaching activities. This position offers a comprehensive experience in both experimental and theoretical aspects of scientific work, fostering your development as a researcher.

Qualifications
You as a PhD candidate has a theoretical depth and an experimental interest. Thermodynamical and materials characterizations are important for this research project. Appropriate background for the position is a Master’s degree with a focus on Materials Engineering, or equivalent. Experience in microstructural and thermodynamical characterization of metallic materials is considered as a merit.

We seek motivated and enthusiastic candidate capable of conducting leading-edge research, working independently, and collaborating effectively within a team. Excellent communication skills and fluency in both spoken and written English are essential.

During evaluation, special emphasis is placed on:

• Knowledge and experience relevant to the current research project
• Quality of Master thesis
• Communication and collaboration skills
• Personal characteristics relevant to research work
