Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 2 billion per year. We currently have 1,500 employees and 17,900 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Urban Water Engineering research group at the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Natural Resources Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher specializing in wastewater treatment. Join our team to explore the use of mining industry by-products as filter materials for wastewater treatment, in close collaboration with LKAB.

Subject description
Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and waste water) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public’s health and safety.

Project description
The Urban Water Engineering research group holds a leading position in research and education in urban water systems, focusing on stormwater, wastewater management, and sewer systems. Our mission is to advance sustainable urban water solutions. Joining the Urban Water Research Group means working in an international, dynamic, and creative environment. The team includes around 50 members from approximately 20 countries, comprising senior researchers, both Swedish and international adjunct professors, and about 25 doctoral candidates. We maintain an extensive collaboration network, both nationally and internationally.

Apatite, traditionally used as a raw material in phosphate fertilizer production, has recently proven to be highly effective in removing phosphorus from wastewater. In previous applications, apatite from Morocco has been utilized in filter systems. This project will explore the potential of regionally available by-products from the Swedish mining industry as filter materials for phosphorus removal from pre-treated domestic wastewater. Laboratory-scale investigations will assess the phosphorus sorption capacity, hydraulic performance of various apatite materials, and potential leaching of harmful substances during the filtration process.

Duties
As a postdoctoral researcher you independently plan and carry out your research work, with the support of two supervisors and in collaboration with industry and project partners. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime).

Qualifications
In order to be eligible for employment as post doctor you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in sanitary/urban water engineering, environmental engineering or equivalent. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a PhD awarded within the past three years. Applicants must have experience or education in sanitary/urban water engineering, wastewater treatment, and chemistry. Strong candidates will demonstrate the ability to work independently, take initiative, and engage with new research areas autonomously. Experience in chemical modeling, laboratory techniques, and analytical methods such as SEM or XRD is highly advantageous. Proficiency in English is essential for presenting research findings at international conferences and in scientific publications. A valid driver’s license is required or should be obtained promptly upon starting the position. Applicants should also be prepared to provide two references upon request. Knowledge of Swedish is also beneficial, given the role’s close collaboration with Swedish municipalities and companies. Teaching experience is a plus.
