Hydrometallurgical extraction of critical raw material
Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students. In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
We are recruiting a PhD student that together with senior researchers will conduct research in the area of “Extraction of critical materials”. The research will include aspects of the interaction between feed material properties and extraction conditions on the recovery of phosphorus and rare earth elements. The work may include theoretical exploration of chemical systems, characterization, experimental studies on extraction, separation and purification as well as evaluation of environmental aspects linked to this. The PhD student will participate in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology and partners from and industry.
Subject description
Process Metallurgy deals with the sustainable extraction of metals from primary and secondary raw materials using both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.
Project description
This research project investigates the role of complex formation in the extraction of phosphorus and rare earth elements (REEs) from concentrates and ores with varying properties, under different leaching conditions. The study also considers how these factors affect subsequent purification and recovery processes. By examining the interactions between feed material characteristics and extraction behavior, the project aims to enhance understanding of how variations in feedstock influence extraction efficiency. Ultimately, this will support the development of adaptable extraction strategies tailored to specific material types.
Duties
A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. As PhD student you will perform experimental studies on e.g. leaching, solution purification, and separation, thermodynamic modeling and characterization of materials using e.g., XRD, SEM, LOM, etc.
As a doctoral student, you will be trained in scientific research through the publication of scientific articles in journals and presentations at national and international conferences. You will also take both mandatory and elective doctoral courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the role of a teacher. As a researcher, you often act as a neutral party in various contexts, which provides a fantastic opportunity to learn how to lead challenging development projects.
Information
The PhD position is for 4 years on 100%. The research work will be conducted mainly at Luleå University of Technology in Luleå but some tasks may also be conducted at industrial partner’s site.
Qualifications
The candidate is required to have a Master thesis degree in Sustainable Process Engineering specializing in minerals and metallurgical engineering, Process Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Materials engineering, Chemistry or equivalent. Knowledge and experience in metallurgical and mineral processing methods, experimental work at high temperature but also from work with acids and basis, characterization of materials using a. o. XRD, SEM, leaching tests and thermodynamic modeling is of advantage for the PhD position.
The candidate is expected to demonstrate strong commitment and self-motivation. As the project will be carried out in close collaboration with partners from industry practical limitations must be considered and the ability to collaborate in a larger group is essential. The candidate shall have good knowledge in English language
