About EISCAT and EISCAT_3D

EISCAT AB is a Swedish company owned by the Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish governments, with each owning one third. Our operations are based in three countries, with headquarters in Kiruna. The company was established in 2024 to take over operations that have been conducted by EISCAT Scientific Association since 1975. The company owns assets and facilities of significant value in three countries and is operated by a small, highly competent organization of about 30 employees. We conduct ionospheric and atmospheric measurements to map how the sun and the earth interact, among other things to support work on global climate models. We operate in Finland, Norway, and Sweden, and all our facilities are located north of the Arctic Circle.

EISCAT_3D is the most advanced phased array radar system for ionospheric and atmospheric research in the world and recognized by the EU as an ESFRI Landmark. It is currently in the last stages of development and will be commissioned to replace the existing UHF and VHF systems over the coming years.
