Presentation:

We want to be more! The research institute Swerim conducts needs-based industrial research and development concerning metals and their route from raw material to finished product. Swerim has 200 co-workers in two locations in Sweden - Luleå and Stockholm. Our vision is a fossil-free and circular industry.

Project Description

The project forms part of the RECAPS initiative (Refractory Optimisation and Casting Powder Simulation for Continuous Casting), which builds upon the success of previous projects such as DREAMS II and CLOPTIMAL II. These projects have advanced the understanding of nozzle design, gas flow, and clogging phenomena in continuous casting. RECAPS now takes the next step: simulating and characterising the casting powder behaviour using the new Continuous Casting Simulator (CCS 2.0): one of the world’s most advanced physical modelling facilities for steel casting, located at Swerim Luleå.

This project is not only a technical challenge but also a bridge between laboratory research and industrial implementation. By contributing to RECAPS, you will help shape the future of sustainable steelmaking, ensuring efficient, defect-free, and circular processes for next-generation continuous casters.

Project Key Activities and Goals
* Characterise industrial casting powders using TGA, XRF, and LECO analysis to determine gas emissions, composition, and weight loss behaviour.
* Develop a synthetic oil-based mixture to mimic the physical behaviour of casting powders in liquid metal modelling.
* Perform casting powder simulation trials using the upgraded CCS 2.0, with real-time measurements of flow and level stability.
* Validate the synthetic oil-based mixture data from CCS 2.0 against plant trials at SSAB Luleå
* Identifying key parameters that govern powder behavior
* Collaboration with leading industrial partners (SSAB, RHI Magnesita) and cross-disciplinary research teams at Swerim.

Qualifications
Curious master student in materials science or metallurgy or chemical engineering who is interested in laboratory work, characterisation techniques, and data analysis. The project will be a collaboration between SSAB, RHI-Magnesita, and Swerim.

Project time
The project is intended for a master thesis (30hp). The start date is January 2026 or can be mutually decided through negotiations.

Further information
This project is intended to be performed at Swerim in Luleå. Swerim rewards the student with 50000 SEK for an approved master thesis (30hp).
